Introduction

INCON Pty Ltd was engaged to provide structural engineering design and review services for a materials handling (dust) shed at the Southern Quarries site in Sellicks Hill, South Australia. The project formed part of operational improvements within an active quarry environment, requiring structural modifications to accommodate revised access and material handling requirements. The scope focused on structural verification and optimisation of steel framing elements to ensure safe integration of new access systems within the existing shed.

Project
description

The project involved the structural assessment and modification of an existing materials handling shed to facilitate:

  • Installation of new roof access systems, including walkways and ladders
  • Construction of a new shed building
  • Integration of mechanical equipment and access infrastructure
  • Review of connection details, including brackets, cleats, and fixings

Key structural elements included steel beams (notably 310UC members), purlins, and supporting framing systems forming part of the shed structure.

Challenge

  • The design required interfacing with the materials handling system requiring bracing free bays, without compromising the structural integrity of the shed.
  • The introduction of walkways and roof access systems necessitated optimisation of member positions to achieve adequate clearance while maintaining structural performance.
  • Solutions needed to reduce disruption to existing operations and ease of installation.

Solution

INCON delivered a coordinated and constructible structural solution:

  • Assessed feasibility of raising key structural members and determined that associated members must also be adjusted to maintain structural continuity and load transfer.
  • Developed solutions allowing selective lifting of beams while ensuring compatibility with adjacent framing systems and preventing overstressing.
  • Adopted modularised construction methods and maximising off-site construction / fabrication.

Outcome

The project delivered a practical and efficient upgrade to the materials handling shed, achieving:

  • Safe and compliant roof access and walkway integration
  • Optimised structural framing construction with minimal disruption to existing infrastructure
  • Reduced construction complexity through targeted interventions
  • Improved operational accessibility and maintenance capability

Incon’s engineering-led approach ensured that structural integrity was maintained while enabling functional improvements within a constrained quarry environment.
