Incon was engaged by Ventia to provide specialist structural design review services for the North–South Corridor: River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project, one of South Australia’s largest infrastructure developments. This major motorway upgrade forms a critical component of Adelaide’s transport network, involving complex tunnelling, motorway systems, and integrated infrastructure.

Project
description

The T2D Project is a major transport infrastructure initiative delivering a continuous motorway corridor through Adelaide, including:

  • Twin road tunnels (Northern & Southern tunnels)
  • Motorway and local road upgrades
  • Bridges, retaining structures, and civil infrastructure
  • Tunnel systems including ventilation, drainage, and safety systems
  • Smart motorway systems and traffic management infrastructure

The project scope includes extensive structural, civil, mechanical, and operational systems integration, with strict functional and performance requirements governing design delivery. Additionally, tunnel infrastructure must meet demanding operational criteria including traffic performance, safety, ventilation, drainage and emergency response systems, as outlined in functional requirements documentation.


Challenge

The T2D project presented highly complex engineering and coordination challenges:

  • Integration of structural, civil, mechanical, ITS, and operational systems across a live transport corridor
  • Designs required to meet detailed Contract Scope and Functional Requirements (CSCR), including safety, durability, and operational efficiency
  • Design and review of in-tunnel structural systems including:
    • Architectural panel support frames
    • M&E gantry structures
    • Signage support systems
  • Need to independently review and validate design packages while maintaining program timelines
  • Ensuring all designs support long-term maintenance access, asset management, and lifecycle performance
