Introduction

Incon was engaged to provide engineering assessment and reporting services for stormwater and structural considerations associated with the glasshouse facilities at Urrbrae High School, Waite Campus. The project required a practical and buildable solution to support refurbishment works while ensuring effective drainage performance and structural integrity.

Project
description

The project involved inspection and engineering review of existing glasshouse structures (G24 & G26) located at Hartley Grove, Urrbrae. The scope included supporting refurbishment works involving removal and replacement of roof cladding systems with polycarbonate sheeting, along with associated structural modifications and drainage considerations.

The works included:

  • Removal of existing glass and polycarbonate roof systems
  • Installation of new polycarbonate sheeting and supporting purlins
  • Integration of flashing systems and roof drainage interfaces
  • Review of stormwater behaviour and discharge pathways

Incon’s role focused on site inspection, engineering assessment, and preparation of a detailed report to guide construction works and ensure compliance.

Challenge

The project presented several engineering challenges:

  • Existing structure limitations, with ageing glasshouse framing not originally designed for modified loading conditions
  • Stormwater management constraints, particularly around roof drainage performance following material changes
  • Interface coordination, ensuring compatibility between new cladding systems, flashings, and existing gutters
  • Limited documentation, requiring reliance on site inspection and engineering judgement
  • Construction constraints, including maintaining operational areas and minimising disruption within an active school environment

Additionally, the introduction of new roofing materials required reassessment of load paths, drainage flow behaviour, and potential ponding risks.

Solution

Incon delivered a targeted and practical engineering solution through:

  • Conducting a comprehensive site inspection to assess existing structural condition and drainage behaviour
  • Providing a detailed engineering report outlining structural considerations, risks, and recommended modifications
  • Reviewing roof geometry and drainage flow paths to ensure effective stormwater discharge and prevent ponding
  • Advising on purlin strengthening and support requirements to accommodate new polycarbonate roofing systems
  • Ensuring constructibility-focused recommendations, aligned with contractor methodologies and site constraints
  • Identifying potential risks early and proposing mitigation strategies to avoid construction delays

Key Engineering Value Delivered

  • Enabled safe and efficient refurbishment of ageing glasshouse structures
  • Reduced construction risk through clear, actionable engineering guidance
  • Improved stormwater performance and reduced likelihood of future drainage issues
  • Supported contractor decision-making with practical, site-specific solutions
  • Delivered a cost-effective engineering outcome through targeted assessment rather than overdesign
